Built in 1852, historic Surratt House was a tavern, post office, and polling
place before the Civil War. During the war, it was a safehouse for the
Confederate underground in So. MD. The country home of Mary Surratt, first
woman to be executed by the US government for conspiring with John
Wilkes Booth to assassinate Abraham Lincoln, it is now a with museum with
wonderful programs and events, recapturing the history of mid-19th century
life and the fascinating web of the Lincoln conspiracy.
