The N.C. Maritime Museum in Beaufort preserves and interprets all aspects of the state's maritime heritage through educational exhibits, programs and field trips (some have fees). It offers a national perspective on coastal environment and barrier island ecology.
Facilities include an auditorium, library and Watercraft Center. It is open 360 days a year, closing for major holidays.
Free exhibits feature fish mounts, aquaria, shell collections, dioramas that interpret natural history, boats, commercial and sport fishing history, and lifesaving. New exhibits include artifacts from the "Queen Anne's Revenge" (Blackbeard's flagship) and the skeleton and heart of a 33-foot-long sperm whale.
The museum has a branch in Southport. Both are managed by the Division of State History Museums, within the N.C. Department of Cultural Resources (www.ncdcr.gov). Events are listed at www.ncculture.com.
