Standing majestically across the river from downtown Wilmington, the Battleship North Carolina beckons visitors to walk her decks and envision daily life as well as the fierce combat that her crew faced in the Pacific Theatre during World War II. Visitors should allow at least two hours for the self-guided tour of the nine decks, including the gun turrets, sick bay, crew's quarters and engine room.
The memorial is open every day of the year, starting at 8 a.m.; closing hours vary seasonally. Admission ranges from $3-$12; children age 5 and under are admitted free.
The battleship is a state historic site, part of the N.C. Department of Cultural Resources (www.ncculture.com).
