The Graveyard of the Atlantic Museum is dedicated to the preservation, advancement and presentation of the maritime history and shipwrecks of North Carolina's Outer Banks from the earliest period to the present.
The waters off the Outer Banks entomb thousands of vessels and countless mariners who lost their struggle against the forces of war, piracy and nature. The area known as "the Graveyard of the Atlantic" off our northeast coast has one of the highest densities of shipwrecks in the world, holding some of America's most important maritime history.
Admission is free. The museum is open 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Monday through Friday.
It is affiliated with the N.C. Maritime Museum (www.ncmaritimemuseums.com) and is managed by the Division of State History Museums, within the N.C. Department of Cultural Resources (www.ncdcr.gov). Events at these and other state history museums are listed at www.ncculture.com.
