The Museum of the Cape Fear Historical Complex collects, preserves and interprets the history and culture of southern North Carolina from prehistory to the present. The historical complex includes the 1897 Poe House and the 4.5-acre Arsenal Park site (containing the remnants of the U.S. Arsenal, built in 1836 and used during the Civil War).
Through exhibits and educational programming, the museum complex raises public awareness of the past and its influence on the present. It provides technical assistance to nonprofit groups within its region.
Activities are free at the complex, which is closed on Mondays. It is managed by the Division of State History Museums, within the N.C. Department of Cultural Resources(www.ncdcr.gov).
Events at this and other state history museums -- along with state history and art museums -- are listed at www.ncculture.com.
