Dr. Charlotte Hawkins Brown started the renowned Palmer Memorial Institute near the small Guilford County town of Sedalia in 1902. This preparatory school for African Americans transformed more than 2,000 young lives. The Guilford County site includes Dr. Brown's home as it looked in the 1940s, plus numerous campus buildings, Kimball Hall and the educator's gravesite.
The museum complex is managed by the Division of State Historic Sites & Properties (www.nchistoricsites.org) within the N.C. Department of Cultural Resources (www.ncdcr.gov).
Events at the Charlotte Hawkins Brown Museum and other state historic sites are listed at www.ncculture.com.
