As a child, James K. Polk lived on this Pineville property with his family on
the early Mecklenburg frontier.
This often-overlooked president greatly expanded the nation into the war
with Mexico. The site commemorates other major events during his
administration as our 11th president including the annexation of California
and the settlement of the Oregon boundary dispute.
This state historic site near the South Carolina border includes a
reconstructed home, barn and kitchen. There are no admission fees.
The Polk homeplace is one of 27 public facilities managed by the Division
of State Historic Sites & Properties (www.nchistoricsites.org) within the
N.C. Department of Cultural Resources (www.ncdcr.gov). Events at all of
these state historic sites -- as well as state history and art museums --
are listed at www.ncculture.com.
