About 800 years ago Native Americans built a political and ceremonial center at the fork of the Town Creek River and Little River, in what is now Montgomery County. Visitors may tour the central mound, reconstructed town house, east lodge and burial house of this state historic site.
Native Americans lived in that area as long as 13,000 years ago. Town Creek Indian Mound has been the focus of a consistent program of archaeological research for more than 50 years.
Town Creek is one of the most popular state historic sites in North Carolina, hosting several star-gazing and nighttime astronomy programs throughout the year. It is managed by the N.C. Department of Cultural Resources (www.ncdcr.gov).
Events at Town Creek and other state historic sites, as well as state history and art museums, are listed at www.ncculture.com.
