Charles B. Aycock was born into a rural Wayne County home in 1859. Interested in politics from his youth, Aycock began to practice law and become active in the Democratic Party. In 1900 he was elected governor and targeted the improvement of public education as hia main goal; by the time he left office in 1904, one school had been built for each day he was governor.
Today a typical 19th-century schoolhouse stands on this family farm site, along with the main house, a separate open-hearth kitchen, a corn crib and smokehouses.
This state historic site is part of the N.C. Department of Cultural Resources (www.ncdcr.gov). Events at the Aycock Birthplace and other state historic sites are listed at www.ncculturecom.
