The Moves Make the Man
Grades: 5 to 10
This novel has a basketball theme and plenty of action, but sport is merely the vehicle for delivering a serious story of friendship and madness between two youths--one black and one white--in trouble.

Pros: This is a great book. It won NEWBERRY HONORS. It's Brooks's 1st and best novel. The story takes place in the 60's. It's about a white boy (Bix) who lives a troubled life and a black boy (Jerome) Jerome is telling the story 2 weeks after Bix runs away. But the two form a unlikely friendship and show the definition of a friend. Basketball fans in particular will love this book.
