Guide to Old Testament History
Rob & Cyndy Shearer
Grades: 1 to 12
This book outlines a reading program which will take you through the history of Israel by reading through the historical books from Genesis to Nehemiah chronologically. Old Testament history is divided into 196 Bible readings (approximately 1 chapter each). For each reading there are a series of questions to help focus on the significant details. There are also a number of background notes and some suggestions for further study. This is intended as a first history course for the early elementary grades (though many parents are using it with high school students).

Pros: This guide makes it easy to go through Old Testament history with your students. The guide goes chapter by chapter and contains study questions. There are personal notes from the authors regarding how to handle difficult situations in the text. I found it helpful to see how someone else handled delicate subjects (i.e. circumcision or Sodom and Gomorrah). We are only part way through the guide. We'll let you know how it turns out.

Pros: Although this book is intended as an early elementary course it is wonderful for studying the Old Testament chronologically with older students. The discussion questions in the guide are great and often can be used as life application questions. There are often background notes that are interesting and very helpful with your study. Occasionally there is an activity suggested, usually chart making that really help to put things in order.

Pros: I LOVE IT! This starts off a 7 year history study in chronological order. What a concept! The format is easy, the lessons are interesting and the discussions are priceless. Very well done and worth the time spent. This is my son's favorite subject this year. (Mine too!).
